Multiple Connections for a Single Computer Available Now!

Multiport Point to Point Connection (MPP) is now available through Waycom. What this means to you the customer is the chance for much higher transfer speeds and downloads from the internet. By combining 2 modems and binding them together to create a single data connection your download speed will double. The speed that you get will vary from about 48K to 67.2K.

This will be a true high speed connection, unlike 56K protocols such as V.90, X-2 and 56K-Flex this is not a compression speed that reduces upload speed to gain download speed, it is a true full duplex, full bandwidth, high speed connection.

Since up until now the 56K protocols have not been available because of the phone service here in Wayland and surrounding areas, we have continued to explore ways to provide exceptional service to our customers. While the telephone company still refuses to cooperate this is a method that we discovered that would bypass some of the limitations of the current phone system and allow true high-speed internet access for home users.

To access this service the following requirements must be met:

  • A Current Dialup Account With Wayland Communications.
  • Windows 98 (Or other OS that supports MPP).
  • Two Available Telephone Lines.
  • Computer with 2 Modems Installed.
  • The two modems do not have to be of the same type, or even the same speed rating. They may be internal or external, Serial, USB, PCI or ISA. In other words any modem that you may have should work just fine for this. You should test the modems individually to check for proper operation before attempting to make an MPP connection. You will need to connect the two modems to two different phone lines.

How To Create a Connection for MPP

Once you have established the proper operation of the two modems you will then need to create a new dialup connection. The connection that you create MUST use the 792-4030 number, as this is currently the only dialup bank that supports MPP connections. Once you have created the dialup you will need to adjust the properties as described in the setup sheet that you were given when your account was established. Please note, the use of the terminal window is NOT required for dialup connections placed to the server using the 792-4030 number. You will then need to select the tab at the top labeled "MULTILINK"

You will now need to select "Use additional devices" then select the ADD button. You will then need to select the device (modem) that will be used to make the second connection. You will also need to verify that the Phone Number that is in the lower box is 792-4030. Then press OK.

You should now see the new Additional Device listed in the large white box. You may now click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window.

You may now use your new MPP connection to Wayland Communications. When connecting, the first modem will begin dialing and connect as normal. Once this connection has been established, the second modem will begin to dial. If everything has been set correctly you will be able to check the status of your dialup connection after the second modem has succesfully connected and see that there are 2 devices connected. The speed displayed will be the combined speeds of the connection speed of the two modems.

Should you need to disconnect the second line, you may simply go to the dialup status and press the "Details" button and then you will see the button to disable the secondary line without disconnecting the primary. You may then use the same button to reconnect the second line.

Currently this is being offered at no additional charge to current Waycom customers. We do anticipate some rate restructuring during the next year (cheaper rates) and will decide at that time if we can continue to offer MPP services at no additional cost. The other factor of course is the fact that this also requires multiple connections on our end too. I will be monitoring the line loads to be sure that the MPP connections do not cause problems.
