- Q: Do you "kick people off" after a certain amount of time?
A: No, sometimes though due to the methods needed to make sure that
our modems are working correctly we send out a little packet that
requires a response. Sometiomes the users computer is too busy to
answer that request. If this happens too many times then the modem
gets reset. This is necessary to keep the modems operating for your
conveniance when I am not here at the office.
Also, some people fail to comply with the Terms
of the user agreement. Placing a three hour limit on their connections
is used as an alternative to removing the account.
- Q: How come I don't get on after I put in my password?
A: After the password you must press the [enter] key. This is
the only way that the computer knows that you are done typing.
- Q: Why do I have to use a "terminal window" to login?
A: There are a couple of reasons for this. Number one is security.
Waycom™ chooses to use Unix authentication that does not
require a clear text list of usernames and passwords.
This method also allows me to get important messages to the users
at a much higher percentage rate than other methods. This means
that I can warn you easier when your service may not be available
for a few hours during updates and maintanence.
Please note that with the newest server (792-4030) it is not
necessary to use the terminal window, however this server still
uses Unix authentication. The server will work with the terminal
window, but does not require it.
- Q: Why do people get errors when trying to email files to me?
A: The filesize of any email message coming in to Waycom has been
limited to 1 Megabyte. The reason for this is that too many people
either send files from their office or have friends that send large
files from offices. Most of these offices are on high speed direct
access networks. First of all, some of these files are attempts to
illegally copy software, while others are legitimate files.
Email is NOT the way to transfer large files of this type. What may
take only a minute or two to send from the office, it may take hours
to download from a dialup connection. This ties up server resources,
and frequently causes errors. It also causes the user to not be able
to get their other email.
The total size of the email box is not limited, only the size of each
message. If you have legitamate files to send through email that exceed
the 1 Megabyte limit, you will need to break the file into smaller parts
to send them (see your email programs documentation and help files to
learn how to do this).
- Q: Why can't I download my email?
A: You may have a message that will take hours to download ( please
read the previous FAQ ). I have written a program to assist users
with the ability to delete these files from the server without
downloading them. The program is called SEmail and can be downloaded
from the Software page.
- Q: Do you see or record what I am doing?
A: No, unless we are required by law to do so, we do not
log or record what you are doing. We do not profile customers
for resale to advertising companies. All back logfiles are
secured offline in a safe location to prevent theft or viewing
by anyone other than the system administrators who may need to
use them for troubleshooting or legal purposes.
Rest assured, Waycom believes that privacy is a very important
issue and does not allow anyone access to any information about
you, nor do we even record anything more than information about
your connections to our servers. We do not log any data that you
may send or receive from other servers.
In the untimely event that Waycom is legally ordered to log
this information, we will comply with the law concerning these
issues.
